I think Max Corbacho is driven by a love of life’s great mysteries. His music is fully informed and animated by this, by (as I’m hearing it) a quest for something transcendent, something far beyond our conventional, mundane states of being. I believe that, in this respect, Max is a kindred spirit to Lucette Bourdin, whom I recently featured here. In its feeling of reverence, its quest for purity, Max’s music often reminds me of Steve Roach’s magnus opus, Mystic Chords & Sacred Spaces.

Max recently re-released his second album, Far Beyond the Immobile Point, originally released in 2000. Two key features of this new, remastered version are (1) Max was able to segue all the tracks together, so we get to enjoy it as an unbroken flow, and (2) two bonus tracks. This all-synth, beatless, deep-ambient album now includes nine pieces, totaling nearly 75 minutes.

Any one of Max’s albums is evidence enough of his talent, commitment and maturity as an artist. Even this early in his career, Max’s sound-sculpting skills are clear, and goosebump-exciting to hear.

Primigenial Frontier is an ideal opener, capturing the entire album’s essence. It’s far away and vast, soothing and chilling. Everything is strangely illuminated, deep and still. A boundless intelligence, patient and probing, is suggested. “Primigenial” means firstborn, original, primary – and this feels just like that. We’re on the threshold of the unknown (and perhaps unknowable). It’s not even drift – this is a mesmerizing standstill. “Tantalizing” is the best word I can conjure for it. One just wants to behold this, with no need to move or look elsewhere.

Our journey proceeds through the unnerving, yet tempting Predawn Darkness, with its ominous, tectonic roars, to The Threshold, which can be a gateway to whatever the listener dares. Mystery, knowledge and the great power that comes with it, are all beckoning.

Soundless Sign is enigmatic and still, a mystic vision of expansion and depth. The bass sounds like our frame of reference dropping off below, as spacetime flies away from us in all directions.

This all brings us to the title track, by far the album’s longest piece at over 23 minutes. A wonderful glassy, shimmering and chiming, over a thrilling depth. Glorious, luminous chords slowly flying past. We have travelled a long way – where are we? Look within for the answer.

Delightful bursts of living light dispel the murk; exhilarating and sobering. There is so much we don’t know and cannot know, so much we can’t even imagine, but how can that matter when we are given so much? Our vision – our sense of what is possible, despite so much unknowable – is expanding. The final few minutes settle us right here, in an unimaginable fertile vastness, as we reconcile with that unknown.

The two bonus tracks, which conclude the album, both have striking titles. Ancient Transition instills a sense of eons past. What changed, and what of the ancient ways was lost in transition? Hundred Miles of Emptiness is calm, but not serene – still, but foreboding. Mysteries remain, and there is no presumption of answers here.

Far Beyond the Immobile Point is thrilling, ecstatic, beautiful and joyous to hear.  Highly recommended!

This is the second release of Spanish composer Max Corbacho, presenting a collection of seven non-rhythmic, highly atmospheric ambient space tracks, so taking a different road than was heard on his nice debut «Vestiges».

The inspiration for «Far beyond the Immobile Point» actually came from the first chapter of Umberto Eco´s novel «Foucault’s Pendulum». Eco’s poetical vision of the universe presented in his work inspired Max to do a much more introspective and contemplative work. The music breaths far more abstraction and the lack of rhythm and percussion reinforced his vision of remoteness in the universe.

Overall, the quiet, slowly expanding and flowing music breaths a beautiful sense of darkness but remains accessible all the way.
«Invisible Jewel» is of a lighter nature and is strong piece of harmonious textural spacescapes drifting by.
The album, which is especially suitable as night music, concludes with the 20-minute title track, a great floating tour-de-force into the grandness and serenity of the cosmos surrounding us.

Recommended, especially for fans of Steve Roach.

P.S. In March 2011, «Far Beyond the Immobile Point» was re-released as a digital download, which included two unreleased bonus tracks («Ancient Transition» and «Hundred Miles of Emptiness») recorded at the same time of the intial recording of the album. In addition, all gaps between the tracks have been fixed, resulting in a seamless atmospheric ambient experience as originally intended by the composer.

The Spaniard Max Corbacho is a master in creating atmospheres. It is not the first time that I have put my admiration for his music in writing, for «The Talisman» this will not be different. Stronger: in my opinion with this album he has created his best work until now. Armed with modern synthesizers like Korg Triton and Z1, he makes wonderful stretched sounds that together form a magnificent moody image. But the music absolutely not sounds if he uses the presets from these instruments. The cd has eleven tracks but they all flow into each other in an intriguing way. Corbacho’s sounds are warm, intense, deep but also accessible. Actually, he goes further where Steve Roach, apparently a great example, has started long ago. It sounds like a text of an advertisement or tearsheet but I can’t help it because you must undergo this music like a warm glow. Tracks like «Reborn To Expansion», «Three Circles», «The Talisman» (especially this one) and «Cellular Memory» are absolute masterpieces in this ambient/space-area.

For me personally the music of Max Corbacho is the absolute top in this genre at this moment.
It seems a pleasure for me to see this man live some time.

Max Corbacho’s brandnew album «The Talisman» is another great, highly atmospheric journey. It features 72 minutes of expansive and in-depth textural music with a strong cinematic and dreamy impact, spread out over 11 tracks. Moontribe” is contains a collection of previously not published tracks, meant for collaborative projects that finally did not see the light, plus two totally new pieces. I must say it’s great Max didn’t put them on the shelf, as the music presented here is some pretty awesome stuff. It’s an impressive aural journey of 67 minutes through vast tribal-ambient territory in which organic soundscaping comes together with strong rhythmic counterpoints. Captivating tribal rhythms and moving groovescapes know how to pamper the ears. Max proves he can stand in his own right next to ambient-mastery of Steve Roach and alike. The music on “Moontribe” is heartfelt and left a deep impression on me. This bright and varied recording is an absolute must-have fort the fans.

Deep spacey ambience with powerful resonant beats. Moontribe consists of a series of confidently developed electro-atmospheres that slide past with velvet smoothness – clean synthetic sweeps and dense multilayered pads, embellished with mysterious bubbling effects and sonic turbulence. The percussive structures combine natural drums with electronic patterns in evolving cycles that are at times tribal, insistently mesmerising, then soft, dispersed to a trickle. When the beats drain away the inventive depth of Max’s electronic soundscaping is most apparent, luxurious rolling densities and luscious drones full of shifting aural strata

MOOD

The mood is mainly one of manipulated primitive rhythm and spacial ambiguity – ancient futuristic immersives, distant, yet touched with familiarity. The organic individuality of Max’s compositions stops the music from feeling cold or remote – rather a hypnotic warmth pervades everything, glowing sonic colour suffusing silky beds of ambient cloud.

Water surface patterns with graphic enhancements fill all panels – on the front, vivid greens and blues ripple around pinks and bronze shades. Text on the external packaging is uncomplicated – only titles and basic information. Within we find an explanation of the project, a list of sound sources, thanks and contact details.

OVERALL

Moontribe is «a collection of previously not published tracks, destined originally to collaboration projects that finally did not see the light, plus two totally new pieces». This is Max Corbacho’s sixth CD and shows the composer to have developed an engrossing and mature sound – the final two pieces ‘Across The Spectrum’ and ‘Moontribe’ were written two years after the earlier pieces and betray a glorious absorbsion in texture and groove structure. The clarity and transparency of these tracks is a delight to the ear – pulling the listener into beguiling worlds of liquid reverberation and interwoven crystal impact.

WHO WILL LIKE THIS ALBUM

Moontribe is a CD for ambient lovers fond of electro-tribal beats and lush, polished soundscaping. With similarities to Na-Koja-Abad and Steve Roach’s rhythmic material.

“Indalo” is the first full-length collaborative effort of these 2 musicians, who made their own music-business by starting ad21 Music. The concept-album is named after an old Andalusian symbol which still can be found in nowadays Spain. In 2001 Corbacho & Sanfilippo made a journey to a natural park in the south of Spain, where they were overwhelmed by strong impressions & strange beauty of the landscape. Later on they decided to transform them into ambient music. Well, the two have done an excellent job: “Indalo” offers a tremendous atmosphere in which vast textures carry the listener away, accompanied at times by sophisticated tribal percussion. It’s equal to Steve Roach in his best days, where the same beauty lies deep within the carefully crafted soundscapes. Both the darker and lighter shades of life seem to meet in this ongoing journey, ranging from cosmic territory before spiralling down to earth again. This is magnificent stuff, one that deserves a high recommendation.

«After a long search this talented Spanish ambient musician has found a new home to publish his new cd. This is Cobacho’s 3rd album, and again it has become one of pure beauty. There are 4 lenghthy tracks, the last one being the 38 min. titletrac.

They all are absolute candy for the ears. In fact, this cd offers one vast drift of transparent, non-rhythmic soundscapes; these soft coiling and morphing textures are one continues drift into the outer regions, where mysterious undercurrents escort you along the way. The title-track is the only one which features a heavy ambient beat after appr. 20 min. This is heavy atmospheric textural music for a deep drift into the dimensions of space, time and place, sometimes somewhat reminiscent to the stuff of Steve Roach, but with an nice core-sound to it all. Production & soundquality are superb.

«mp3.com’s loss is Tony Gerber’s gain. As musicians leave mp3.com in droves following its restructuring in 2001, Gerber’s SpaceForMusic.com label is grabbing up a fair number of them. Gerber does a fair job of separating the wheat from the chaff with artists like Craig Padilla and Max Corbacho now in the fold.

Corbacho continues in the musical direction he forged on Vestiges and Far Beyond The Immobile Point, moving ever outward into the reaches of deep space music. Whereas Vestiges had some tribal elements, his next release was more expansive, and this CD continues that trend even further. Though technically four tracks, there is a continuous flow of 73 minutes of surreal soundscapes. Long slow synth pads, lush and thick, draw the listener in, with plenty of atmospheric touches and effects. «Remote Sensing» does nothing to dispel the notion that Corbacho is the «Spanish Steve Roach,» as this compares favorably with notable Roach works like The Dream Circle and The Magnificent Void.

Bright shimmering sounds meld with dark churning drones to great effect. The rich metallic character reaches its peak in «Magenta Beauty,» as the music conjures up vivid mental pictures. The 38-minute title track closes the disc out in dreamy style. The entire disc will send you into a deep reverie you
